Save energy, and make your clothes and linens smell extra fresh, by putting up a clothesline, just like your grandparents did. Start simple with a few sheets, towels and pillowcases, and if you like the results, gradually do more loads.

Automatic clothes dryers were once hailed as a miracle of modern housekeeping, but that convenience came with a price: namely, 6% of total electricity consumed by American homes, according to the federal Energy Information Administration. You also have to pay for all that juice, whereas taking advantage of the sun and breeze is free for all!

Remember that expression about sunlight and disinfectant? It really is true. Why spend on artificial products to make your clothes smell like mountain meadows, when you can get a better effect from your backyard?
