I have a half-gallon scrap container on my counter top. When it is full I go out into my fairly new sparse flower garden, find a bare spot, dig a hole, and bury the scraps.

I have been "amending" my garden like this for two years. The soil is turning out very nicely, thank you. Make sure to bury completely; otherwise, local critters may be digging in your garden.
