Surge Protectors Make it Easy

Plug in the coffee maker, grinder, toaster, microwave, air conditioner, etc. to surge protector power strips that have an off/on button. Then turn them off when no one's home or when they aren't necessary.

Although certain appliances need constant electricity, like refrigerators of course, those that do not are constantly using a small amount of power to enable them to be instantaneously ready -- which is really not necessary. The accumulated effect of unplugging all these non-essential items would make a substantial difference in energy consumption.

The same principal needs to be adapted to cable/internet/phone modems, which unfortunately are left plugged in for hours when no one's home. Part of the problem is that, depending on your setup, turning off these devices may disable your phone, so be aware.
