People seem to be focusing a great deal lately on food miles, which is great, but another important way to dramatically reduce your eco-footprint in the food department that should be getting more attention is to forego, or at least heavily reduce, consumption of meat and dairy.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO) estimates that 18% of greenhouse gases come from livestock. They detailed the widespread and significant environmental problems posed by animal agribusiness in a 2006 report, Livestock's Long Shadow Environmental Issues and Options.
The report examined how animal agribusiness is a major contributor to global climate change, generating even more greenhouse gases than cars and causing massive land and water degradation on a global scale. Read the report here.
