Refresh Compacted Soil

You would need to amend the soil under your new walkway or patio with organic material. This should go down 18 inches or so to get past the compacted soil. Mulch is a good amendment to do this. Simply amend the soil and lightly tamp down the top before putting your walkway or patio down. Due to code requirements and weight requirements for driveways and roads, I think this would have a limited benefit in those areas. Wayne Luke
