The sun beats hard on the west side of our house. A few years ago I took the lattice from the windows out of storage and made some solar screens.

I went to the hardware store and bought some solar screen. It comes on rolls and is inexpensive. I stapled it on the frames of the lattice and put them on. Ready-made solar screens are VERY expensive. DIY screens are cheap and easy to make.

Our AC crashed last week with temperatures in the mid 90's. No problem. Solar screens, fans and open windows have kept the house in the low 80's in the hottest part of the day. Next summer we might save the AC for high 90's+ days.
