The 17-Year Progress Report On The Environment

We''re looking at 17 years as a key interval in the environmental movement -- in recognition of positive results from The Daily Green and Seventeen magazine''s joint survey of environmental concern among young women. Look for the September issue of the magazine for more on those results.

The last 17 years have witnessed the awakening of a global consciousness about the global impact of environmental problems like acid rain, the depletion of the ozone layer and global warming. And it has seen the rising up of a green movement to take action on those same issues. The take home message: Enlightened people have the power to make real change -- but even coordinated worldwide action can show frustratingly slow results.

Also: The last generation has made progress, but it''s a good thing the generation coming of age today cares about the environment. Because there''s still a lot of work to do.
