Hot weather and long days make summer the season for camping, hiking, picnics, pool parties or just hanging out on your front porch. Unfortunately, it also makes summer the season for bug zappers, foggers and other toxic sprays, sunscreen of dubious quality and junk food. This year, send your family out into the great wide open armed with safer, greener alternatives: Battling the Bugs Nobody likes to have their summer fun ruined by clouds of ravenous mosquitoes, which are also on the rise in some areas as temperatures heat up. But the active ingredient in most sprays, N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, or DEET, has been linked to impeded cognition in some animal studies. Play it safe and reach for alternatives made from plant oils like citronella, lemongrass, peppermint and cedarwood. Several companies now make more natural repellants, including Kiss My Face and All Terrain. If the bugs get really bad, put on some long clothes.
Shielded from the Sun
By now most people have heard that exposure to the sun can lead to wrinkles and skin cancer. But sometimes covering up or staying in the shade just isn't an option, or at least a good time. That's when it's time to check out suncreens that are effective yet clear of hazardous ingredients.
Healthy Snacks
When we're active outdoors, we often crave quick eats that are high in fat and carbs. Instead of tossing a candy bar in your bag, why not pre-make some delicious fruit and granola bars? They're actually easy to make, and aren't loaded with artificial preservatives like store-bought brands. Recipe here.
