A luxurious skin cream might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the plight of the world's oceans. But La Mer, the celeb-adored skincare brand, and Oceana, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the oceans, co-hosted a cocktail reception the other night in New York City to celebrate World Ocean Day, which is actually June 8.
A white room decorated with sea shells and ocean prints greeted guests, including Amber Valletta, a spokesperson for Oceanas safe seafood program, and Ted Danson, who is on the board of the group. Model Alek Wek, and actresses Michelle Trachtenberg, and Rosario Dawson also made appearances to celebrate the sea.
Oceana focuses on reducing overfishing and protecting threatened marine habitats. La Mer aided the organization's efforts by announcing a $100,000 donation at the party.
Here is a speech Oceana CEO Andrew Sharpless gave at his alma mater, Germantown Friends School, called Five Things You Need to Know About Our Oceans. The message is simple but important.
