Half a million Americans who would have taken to the road or skies this Fourth of July weekend will instead stay home, and another 4.5 million will choose nearby destinations, according to AAA's annual report on holiday travel. The reason is no surprise: high gas prices.

The Natural Resources Defense Council has produced an analysis that shows how families can easily save enough for next year's vacation by making three simple changes to the way they drive.

  1. Maintain your vehicle by inflating tires to the recommended pressure, changing oil regularly and removing unnecessary items from your trunk.

  2. Drive smoothly, avoiding rapid acceleration and aggressive high-speed driving that can dramatically decrease the number of miles your car will travel per gallon. For more tips, see The Daily Green's 10 Ways to Save 20% on Gas Every Day.

  3. Use alternative transportation once a week. Telecommuting, carpooling or using public transportation can decrease your miles driven – and money paid on gas – to zero. For more tips, see The Daily Green's How to Spend $1 Per Gallon (or Less) on Gas.

These simple tips will save the average driver $800 each year, according to NRDC. To see how much you can save if driving any of the top models on the road, see the NRDC analysis.
