GM-owned Saab has long been known for doing things a little differently, from quirky engines to innovative advertising, console-mounted ignitions and that lovable, turtle-shaped car design. Now, the Scandinavian aviation company and car maker wants you to know that it is also committed to the environment.

While the New York Auto Show was in town this March, Saab hosted a swank party in the lobby of the Frank Gehry-designed IAC/InterActiveCorp Building (owners of Ticketmaster, Evite, Match.com, Lending Tree and much more). As fancy cocktails were served and a DJ worked the wheels of steel, svelte models encircled two shrouded cars, covering them with silvery white umbrellas. In a dramatic instant, the sheets were slipped off, and the umbrellas were closed in unison, revealing two sporty white Saab 9-X BioHybrid concepts.

Under the vehicles' clean lines is a 200 hp, 1.4-liter BioPower turbo engine, optimized for bioethanol (E85) fuel, and backed by GM’s next-generation hybrid system. That means reduced emissions and better efficiency, which is bolstered by advanced aerodynamics. A solar cell in the glass roof adds charge to the hybrid battery pack.

To mark the spirit of the bold concept designs, Saab also partnered with another Scandinavian company, Reflective Circle, to promote eco fashion. A series of models worked the floor in front of the Saabs, showing off designs by Swedish redhead Josefin Lassbo. The styles were classic basics, like a bright red t-shirt, black and white patterned dress and dark blue shirt dress.

The clothes are made of sustainable "bio-cotton," certified by Skal International. Above, check out this exclusive video of the event from The Daily Green.
