Discover Natural Bug Repellents

To many, biting insects are the very definition of annoying. Plus, mosquitoes and ticks can sometimes carry diseases, from Lyme disease to West Nile virus. Long clothes can certainly help, but that\'s not always an option in the heat of summer.

\r\n\r\n

The active ingredient in most bug sprays, N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, or DEET, has been shown to be effective, but it has also come under fire in recent years by health researchers. DEET has been found to impede cognition in some animal studies. Plus, some people find that DEET-based repellents have a harsh, chemical smell and feel.

\r\n\r\n

Many families are looking for more natural alternatives, which can be made from plant oils like citronella, lemongrass, peppermint and cedarwood. For example, California Baby\'s sprays are designed to soothe existing bites while repelling fleas, mosquitoes, ticks and biting flies -- all with pleasant smelling (and sustainably harvested) essential plant oils. Learn more at www.californiababy.com.

\r\n\r\n

Do note that most natural bug repellents must be refreshed more often than DEET-based products, because they aren\'t quite as long lasting.

Ingredients include isopropyl palmitate (from coconut oil), cyclomethicone (from silica) and essential oils. The most recent formulations of Swy Flotter no longer contain parabens, which the Environmental Working Group points out have been linked to allergies, harm in animal studies and possibly endocrine disruption. Parabens are still found in many conventional personal care products, and their safety is now being debated.

Natural repellents....need to find what works on your chemistry
What folks may not realize is that your body has it's own chemistry and you have to find the mix of natural stuff that works on you. For instance, many folks swear that avon skin so soft keeps bugs off them, that hasn't been my experience and it's all because your individual body chemistry is different. I've also heard that certain vitamins make you taste bad (vitamin D) and perhaps having iron rich blood makes you tasty as well. There is no one natural insecticide that will work on everyone you have to try them out and see which works for you. I for one will be looking up some old herbal recipes from the orient and places such as that....those guys usually know what they're talking about better than newer stuff.

These do not work
Lets get real here, I have tried several brands of "natural repellent" and found that they do not work significantly. Including one brand where mosquitoes bit me right through a fresh and heavily applied layer of "repellent." If there are any that are really effective when mosquitoes are abundant, please let me know.

Lemongrass as insect repellant
Funny they use Lemongrass to repel insects. I'm a beekeeper and we use it to attract bees.

Good Homebrew Insect Repellant
A nice and natural Insect Repellant is to use Catnip Tea as a spray, in heavily infested areas add a smidgen of DEET, or try a combination with some of the other suggestions here. The tea can discolor white t-shirts slightly. The spray smells quite pleasant and works better than Citronella.

Make your own
Hi,
I also have a recipe for bug repellent.
1 - 8 oz spray bottle.
Fill it with 75% distilled water
Fill the remaining 25% of the bottle with 80 proof vodka
Add 75 drops of frankincense
Shake it before you use it. It works really well (lasting about 3 or 4 hours) and smells really good!
