Oceana, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the world's oceans, wants to remind you that June is National Ocean Month. If you didn't make it to the organization's fabulous cocktail party co-hosted with La Mer in New York City to honor World Ocean Day (June 8), you can still celebrate.

The group has come up with a list of 10 things you can do to save the oceans (complete with a clever acronym - SAVE OCEANS).

Here is Oceana's list of steps:

  1. Start now. Join Oceana. (Or, we presume, any oceanic conservation group.)
  2. Ask your grocer to post warning signs regarding the FDA's mercury advice.
  3. Vote responsibly.
  4. Eat sustainable seafood.
  5. Opt out of shark fin soup.
  6. Conserve energy and reduce your carbon footprint.
  7. Eliminate plastic waste.
  8. Avoid products that harm the oceans, such as cosmetics containing shark squalene. (Ew.)
  9. Nix litter on beaches.
  10. Spread the word.
