With its use pioneered by Portland, Ore., the VendingMiser is appearing in more and more locations around the country.

Yes, the VendingMiser. It's an add-on to snack machines that turns off if no one is in the room, and only refrigerates enough to keep items fresh. That can save 40% on electricity use, energy costs and carbon emissions, according to the Chicago Tribune, which reported on Evanston's use of the machines today.
