The Independent reported yesterday that Vanity Fair will not publish its annual Green Issue this May, as it has for the past three years. The Green Issue cover has featured the likes of Madonna, Julia Roberts and Leonardo DiCaprio in the past.
Conde Nast, the publisher of Vanity Fair, said in a statement that the environment has become integrated in the news to such an extent that a specific green issue was no longer necessary. "Vanity Fair remains committed to covering the environment, and well spread our coverage throughout the year, instead of relegating the bulk of it to a specific issue," a spokeswoman said to The Independent. We do hope that Vanity Fair continues their environmental coverage and finds ways to incorporate green ideas into more mainstream topics.
Naturally there is skepticism surrounding this change. Some (such as the Pew Research Center) are asking if the economic crisis has eclipsed our concerns about the environment, and others may try to claim that green is merely a fading trend something we at The Daily Green strongly disagree with.
Overall it's a hard time for media, but we hope the trend to cut coverage of environmental issues doesn't continue.
