Since an autistic girl's family was compensated for problems associated with immunizations, parents nationwide have had a renewed concern about the safety of childhood vaccinations, given the presence in some of a mercury-based preservative. Mercury is a known neurotoxin, and remains a concern among parents despite studies that dispute any link between autism and exposure to thimerosal, which has been phased out of most vaccines administered to children.
"To date, the best science indicates that there is no association between vaccines and autism," Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, wrote in an op-ed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "As part of our efforts to foster understanding of autism, CDC is currently conducting the largest study to date designed to identify potential autism causes and risk factors."
