Rivers Cresting at Record Flood Stages

By Dan Shapley

Homes and live continue to be in danger, as severe flooding continued to push rivers above their banks across the American heartland.

Some rivers, like the Meramec River in Missouri, have yet to crest, and yet are at record or near-record flood stages. Many residents feared levees would fail.

Meanwhile, fresh snow and rain is adding to the threat.

Scientists have warned that flooding from extreme precipitation events will become more common as the climate changes due to global warming.
