Typhoon Neoguri is headed for China as a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of almost 98 mph, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Only two days ago, the forecast called for the cyclone to briefly reach Category 2 strength before weakening in the South China Sea ahead of landfall in southern China. A day ago, the forecast still called for weakening to Category 1 status before landfall.

Now, the storm is brushing by Hainan, China as a Category 2 storm on its way to the mainland.

Currently, its sustained winds are near 98 mph, and it is expected to make landfall on the Mainland with sustained winds close to 80 mph.
