Typhoon Neoguri reached Category 2 hurricane strength on the Saffir-Simpson scale in the past few hours, and its wind speeds have increased beyond what was predicted by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Only yesterday, the forecast called for the cyclone to briefly reach Category 2 strength before weakening in the South China Sea ahead of landfall in southern China.

Now, the storm is expected to retain Category 2 strength for 12 hours or more – and strike Hainan, China as a strong Category 1 hurricane.

Currently, its sustained winds exceed 100 mph, and it is expected to make landfall with sustained winds exceeding 90 mph.
