A Category 1 hurricane, Typhoon Neoguri, is churning through the South China Sea on its way toward landfall in China, or possibly Vietnam, according to data from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Still hundreds of miles south-southeast of Hainan, China, Typhoon Neoguri reached hurricane strength in recent hours, and now packs sustained winds of 75 mph.

It is forecast to become a weak Category 2 storm, with sustained wind speeds of up to 97 mph, before weakening slightly before landfall.
