Few believed life would return to normal after a massive tsunami surged over the coasts of the Indian Ocean in 2004. With hundreds of thousands of homes washed away and 170,000 people dead or missing, the world wondered if Indonesia’s desperate circumstances could recede.

Although 3,000 families remain in temporary shelters, Indonesia’s reconstruction agency claimed immense progress. According to Reuters, more than 100,000 homes destroyed by the Indian Ocean tsunami have been rebuilt, along with over 1,200 miles of roads, 800 schools, 600 hospitals, 17 seaports and 10 airstrips.

Despite such great steps forward, there is still work to be done.
