Tropical Cyclone Nargis has formed in the Bay of Bengal, and it could reach Category 4 strength within days, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

The hurricane is currently a weak Category 1 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, 305 nautical miles east of Madras, India, but warm water and a lack of winds should allow it to grow steadily in strength, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

The cyclone is expected to approach Bangladesh, where last year Cyclone Sidr struck with such force that the nation's rice crop was decimated, and millions were evacuated. It's unclear yet whether Nargis will make landfall in Bangladesh, India or Myanmar, and at what strength it will be when it hits land.

The forecast at present is for the storm to reach Category 4 strength, with sustained winds of more than 130 mph, in about two days.
