Now parents have another reason to dissuade their rebellious teenagers from inking their skin with tattoos. Friday, the Food and Drug Administration announced plans to investigate the potential health and safety concerns surrounding the tattoo industry and the use of tattoo inks, according to Newsday.

As tattoo popularity grows, so does the potential to transmit infections through dirty needles. Tattoo-related infections include HIV, Hepatitis B and C. In addition to infections, the FDA plans to investigate the body’s reaction to tattoo inks, the health and safety of which haven't previously been assessed.
