St. Croix River

Normally a highway bridge might not be seen as one of the greatest threats to America's rivers, but the one proposed across the St. Croix river in Minnesota is unique, according to American Rivers. That's because the river has already been designated by Congress as a Wild and Scenic River, a designation meant to protect a river's scenery from unsightly development... like highway bridges. If it can happen here, the group warns, it could happen on dozens of designated rivers nationwide.
