Crops across the Southeast have been suffering during a months-long drought, and hay is no exception. The lack of hay, according to the News & Observer, is stressing horse and cattle owners who wonder how they'll feed their animals through the winter, as prices for grains have doubled in some cases.
More than usual are seeking help from rescue agencies, or are selling their animals at discount prices.
Compounding the problem, because the drought killed pastures grasses early, owners have had to buy grains earlier in the season than they otherwise would have.
