This month, almost no rain has fallen across the core area of the Southeast drought in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina -- leading to new records of dryness that are all the more impressive because new marks have been set and broken repeatedly for months now.

Overall, the extent of drought expanded in this region in the past week. Here's a look at some of the records set, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, released this morning:

  • In Georgia, 60% of streams were at record-low points for this time of year.
  • More than half of South Carolina's streams measured record lows.
  • One-third of Alabama streams are running at all-time lows.
  • In North Carolina, 80% of the state's population are under water use restrictions. The 283 affected water systems is a state record.
