The Bush Administration brokered a deal with three feuding states yesterday that will give Atlanta more water, as it deals with this historic drought plaguing the Southeast.

The Army Corps of Engineers will hold back more water in Lake Lanier, Atlanta's main water supply. That means less water downstream in Alabama and Florida, where other communities, industries and wildlife draw on the water. The city and region are under various advisories and requirements to conserve water.

Critics say the deal rewards Atlanta for unbridled suburban sprawl that has progressed without planning for dry times, and that it fails to encourage more severe water conservation measures that are possible.
