California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had planned a bipartisan debate on energy and global warming for the 2008 presidential candidates, but as with a similar debate organized recently by Grist few of the candidates agreed to participate.
Neither global warming nor energy is gaining traction as a major campaign issue, according to a recent USA Today/Gallup pole. Democrats have outlined detailed energy plans, while Republicans generally with the exception of John McCain have not.
McCain is also the exception in the Schwarzenegger climate debate story; he claims to have been the only Republican to accept the governor's invitation to a debate prior to the New Hampshire primary in January.
With the twin issues of global warming and foreign oil dependence central to so many of the issues the next president will confront, the 2008 presidential candidates should take McCain's lead. If they don't, we should take notice as voters.
