At least 11 people were left dead after Tropical Storm Lando made landfall with winds of more than 40 mph. That storm has gained in strength and is continuing with 46 mph sustained winds toward Vietnam, which has been ravaged by storms and flooding in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, a second tropical storm, packing 52 mph sustained winds, is approaching the Philippines.

There are different words for tropical cyclones around the world — hurricanes, tropical storms, typhoons. Scientists still debate how these storms will be changed by global warming, but many believe warmer oceans will mean stronger or more frequent storms.
