PETA has attacked both Homeland Security and the National Institute of Health for a bioterrorism research program that relies on the extracted bone marrow of chimpanzees, according to USA Today.
The paper describes Project Bioshield as "a multiagency effort to improve medical countermeasures that could help protect people during biological, chemical, radiological or nuclear terrorist attacks."
The U.S. agencies said they use the fewest number of animals possible, and only for projects that require it. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, however, is raising a ruckus in hopes of limiting or eliminating the use of animal testing in laboratories. Chimpanzees are the closest living being that shares a common ancestor with humans.
