It was a full work day between the time a tanker sprung a leak and the time the Coast Guard knew just how much thick, toxic bunker oil had spilled into San Francisco Bay: Enough, as we know now, to threaten hundreds of thousands of birds, marine mammals, fish -- and even the people who volunteer to wash otherwise doomed wildlife on 40 miles of blackened beach.
It was another four hours before residents in the area, and people around the world, learned that anything was amiss.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., blasted the response, and vowed to investigate, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
