It was a full work day between the time a tanker sprung a leak and the time the Coast Guard knew just how much thick, toxic bunker oil had spilled into San Francisco Bay: Enough, as we know now, to threaten hundreds of thousands of birds, marine mammals, fish -- and even the people who volunteer to wash otherwise doomed wildlife on 40 miles of blackened beach.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., blasted the response, and vowed to investigate, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
