A barrel of oil briefly traded at nearly $104 per barrel Monday, as it hit its highest price ever, even adjusted for inflation, according to the New York Times.

While it closed the day of trading below the record-high price, it traded briefly at $103.95, above the inflation-adjusted $103.75 that triggered the energy crisis of 1980.

It closed trading below the record-high mark. But there's always tomorrow.
