When it comes to charities that embody the spirit of The Daily Green, it's hard to find a better match than the New York Restoration Project. The brainchild of Bette Midler, this group finds forgotten and neglected parks and community gardens in New York City and spruces them up so that the public -- particularly low-income families in the neighborhood -- can enjoy green spaces once again.
If you're a New Yorker, or have a connection to New York, then now is a great time to contribute to this group. After all, how often does one get the chance to dine with Richard Branson during a weeklong vacation in the Virgin Islands? Or take private tennis lessons with John McEnroe? Or be in a movie with Paul Rudd and Steve Carell?
All of those, and dozens more celebrity-studded stunts are yours for the taking (or at least bidding) as part of the New York Restoration Project's online charity auction, which runs on charityfolks.com from today through Friday, Nov. 13. Not surprisingly, given the dates and the charity's founder, this fundraiser has a theatrical bent: It's part of the "Hulaween fundraising gala."
So what can you bid on? Check out these highlights:
