On National Park(ing) Day, parking spots around the country are turned into temporary parks. It's a creative way to draw attention to the need for more public parks in urban areas. The event started in 2006, and last year boasted over 150 park(ing) spots across more than 30 cites around the world. It's an all-volunteer event, and The Trust for Public Land Website has lots of info about starting or joining a park, including a how-to manual and a list of all participating cities.
A park can be many things: a place to hear music, surf the Net, escape the heat, or read a new book. Flip through photos of some of last year's parks and get inspired to start your own park this year.
National Park(ing) Day is Sept. 19, 2008.
