McCain on 7 Key Green Issues
Global Warming, Offshore Drilling, Nuclear Energy and 4 Other Key Issues

Is McCain Still a GOP Maverick on Global Warming?
McCain's green credibility comes with his early bipartisan leadership on a global warming bill, but many environmentally conscious voters are asking, "What have you done for me lately?"
Global Warming
McCain was an early champion of cap-and-trade in the Senate and last supported a 60% cut below 1990 levels of pollution, short of the goal articulated by the worlds scientists. He would allot credits to existing polluters, rather than auctioning them off.
National Security
McCain puts drilling for more oil and building more nuclear power plants at the center of his energy policy, with the goal of increasing independence from foreign oil. Offshore oil drilling would not decrease the need for imports significantly, and investing in new oil production would mean burning oil for longer, exacerbating global warming. Nuclear power provides a controversial form of domestic electricity.
Nuclear Energy
McCain has made expanding nuclear power a central part of his energy platform by calling for the construction of 45 new plants by 2030. Accomplishing that goal would require aggressive government subsidies or policies, perhaps including a global warming cap-and-trade regulation that would increase the cost of coal.
Offshore Oil Drilling
Offshore drilling holds the No. 1 position in John McCains energy policy and stump speech. Drill here now is a common refrain.
Ethanol
McCain has opposed subsidies for corn growers at times, though he's waffled somewhat on the issue as a candidate. He strongly opposes the tariff on Brazilian ethanol, which protects domestic corn growers. In general, he supports the use of ethanol and the development of cellulosic ethanol, but doesn't lay out many specifics about the issue in his Lexington Project energy plan.
Energy Costs
John McCain tops his agenda with drilling for more oil, though experts criticize the idea because it would have no effect on prices for about a decade, and then only a small one. He would offer incentives to anyone who purchases a zero-emissions vehicles.
Food and Product Safety
Food and product safety is largely off the radar for John McCain and the GOP.
GOP Energy and Environment Platform: Summary and Analysis
McCain helped steer his party toward a more realistic statement on global warming, but energy independence and high energy prices overshadow the tepid acknowledgment of the reality of climate change.
McCain's Energy Advisers
Before pro-drilling climate-skeptic Sarah Palin joined his ticket, McCain had surrounded himself with a group of advisers who were fairly hawkish on global warming.
Compare McCain and Obama on Energy and Environmental Issues
The two major party candidates have big differences in the way they view offshore oil drilling, nuclear energy, renewable energy investments and more.
