This is the first post in the new blog URTH Guy, about green Urban Style, Recycling and Reuse, Technology and E-Culture and (hopefully) some Humor. Stay tuned for further posts and design upgrades.
The green blogosphere has been buzzing with excitement today, and not just because Discovery's 24/7 cable channel Planet Green is launching (I'll be attending a watching party later, fyi). It's because groundbreaking Internet "newspaper" (and now Yahoo Buzz staple) Huffington Post -- yes, ye of "more than 1,000 bloggers" -- has launched a bona fide green channel (HuffPost Green).
The maiden voyage day looks really impressive, perhaps not surprising for a site that is known for being one of the strongest e-news and commentary brands on the Intertubes. Self-styled media maven Arianna Huffington explains in her welcome note, "Ever since we launched HuffPost, environmental issues have been a significant part of our focus -- indeed, part of our DNA." Arianna herself has a long history of going green, including her groundbreaking work on cleaner energy policy with the Detroit Project.
What to expect from HuffPo Green? Arianna says a mix of blogs, news, video, forums and more, with a focus on trends as well as hard news. "We're not interested in being greener-than-thou -- just greener today than yesterday," writes Arianna. "Our philosophy is pretty simple: it's not about some people doing everything, but everyone doing something to make the world a more sustainable and better place to live."
The site has already partnered with TreeHugger (and it's sister brand Planet Green), and is edited by (full disclosure) TDG contributor Olivia Zaleski, who has already made a name for herself as a hip columnist over at the Po. Look carefully in the graphic for EarthFirst's package on the "hottest girls in green," and you'll see a pic of Olivia, in a field of flowers.
When I first talked to some friends in the green blogosphere about HuffPo's outing in our turf, I heard some groans. It's natural to feel competitive, but one of the things I really love about this verdant corner of the Net is how truly cooperative, supportive and friendly the community is. I say welcome to HuffPo Green, and welcome to anyone else who wants to come join the conversation for a better planet.
After all, scientists very well may have found ice on Mars, but it's a long way from a few frozen crystals to being, like, somewhere else we can live, man.
