April 23 wasn't only the Heart of Green Awards -- which showcased the LEED Gold-certified Heart Tower -- but also Take Your Child to Work Day at Hearst. Brian celebrated both.

The 2009 Heart of Green Awards gallery showcased eBay "new to you" items, in displays that were 100% reusable. Designed by Matthew David Hopkins and Laurie Stolowitz of 360 Design Events, the displays were made of hollow doors that were later used by Rebuilding Together New York City to renovate low-income homes; the fabric was used by artists associated with Material for the Arts; and the flowers were later displayed at hospitals and hospice care centers with the help of The Flower Power Foundation. The carbon footprint of the event was offset by Conservation International.

Among other efforts in a lifetime of work, Imus has authored three best-selling books in the Green This! series, founded the Deidre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology and taught dozens of schools, hospitals and other institutions how to clean with nontoxic cleansers. The 2009 Heart of Green Awards took place April 23 in the Joseph Urban Theater at the LEED Gold-certified Hearst Tower in New York City. More than 200 guests attended. Visible in the foreground is honoree Summer Rayne Oakes.

Greg Perry, the 2009 Local Hero, inspired an audience of 200 at the Heart of Green Awards ceremony in New York City. His his acceptance speech brought the crowd to its feet. (Watch it!) A high school teacher in Ohio, he not only inspired his marketing class to create the largest green products expo in Ohio, and not only used the proceeds to build the model Ultimate Green Classroom, but he did much of it while battling cancer. A year later, he's doing great, and ready to bestow the Local Hero honor on another deserving individual.

Greg Perry, the 2009 Heart of Green Local Hero, received the night's only standing ovation, for his inspiring acceptance speech. He's accompanied by friend and colleague Flora Brett. Frances Beinecke, the 2009 Heart of Green Lifetime Achievement Award winner, throws her prepared comments aside and tells the audience how inspired she is by the variety of good work being done to further the environmental movement on such a wide variety of fronts -- from food and fashion to children's health and education. As president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, she oversees an organization with 1.2 million members, and programs covering every facet of environmental protection.
