Long winters and unbearably frigid temperatures have long nicknamed Harbin, China, the "Ice City." Located in Northeast China — the brunt of bitter Siberian winds — Harbin can drop to -36 degrees (it averages just 1 degree). Yet, warming is on the rise.

According to a report in Japan Economic Newswire, meteorologists at the Heilongjiang provincial meteorological observatory say global warming is making Harbin hotter. Meteorologists say last year's average annual temperature broke record highs.

Several Chinese scientists have long warned of the catastrophic effects of the country's greenhouse gas emissions — many believe global warming is responsible for China's recent drought and flood disasters. Despite conviction, however, China's unprecedented economic growth is likely to hinder environmental efforts.
