The Town of Greensburg, KS, which was virtually wiped out by a tornado on May 4, 2007, has received some high-profile pledges of help, most notably from Leonardo DiCaprio, who wants to film the rebuilding of the town as a model green community.
But the residents of Greensburg need something even more basic, and immediate, as it gears up for community rebuilding projects this spring that promise 20 new homes for displaced residents.
"We need your help," the Wichita Eagle quoted Andy Bias, president and chief executive of Mennonite Housing, as saying. "We will need volunteer assistance during the building process. These families cannot do this alone. We need skilled and unskilled labor to expedite the building process."
The goal is to reduce the cost of the 1,000-square-foot 3-bedroom homes from $100,000 to $40,000 through donated labor and materials.
To help, call Mennonite Housing at 800-636-5242.
