Billiam the Snowman, who asked Democratic presidential candidates about their positions on global warming in a previous debate, is expected to make a return appearance in tonight's CNN YouTube Republican debate.
(Billiam has subsequently made headlines via a public tiff with Gov. Mitt Romney, a move that probably cements his chances of having a question aired tonight.)The Republican slate, with the notable exception of Sen. John McCain, has largely avoided specifics on how or whether they'd deal with global warming. Gov. Mike Huckabee has said that, like McCain, he would support some kind of cap-and-trade system to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, but beyond that, most competitors have said that they'd aim for energy independence, more ethanol and nuclear power, and expect that those goals would yield some benefits for the climate as well.
None of the Republicans attended a debate earlier this month that focused on environmental issues (only three Democrats Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Dennis Kucinich accepted the invitation), and most have said very little about their plans. It's either hopeful or sad that our expectations for finding out more ride on a fake snowman. Good luck, Billiam.
The debate will be broadcast tonight on CNN at 8 p.m. (ET).
