At least 13 people are dead, and several still missing, after rains "of Biblical proportions," as the Chicago Tribune put it, caused record flooding across a huge swath of the United States this week.
The flooding won't abate immediately, and is forecast to spread into the Northeast as a massive storm system moves in. As much as a foot of rain fell in some locations. Some rivers recorded levels never before seen. Thousands have evacuated their homes.
Storms are expected to produce more intense bursts of precipitation as the climate warms, though there's no way to link this storm to larger climactic trends.
