California and Environmentalists Sue Bush State Says U.S. Department of Energy Is Weak and Unlawful

California Attorney General Jerry Brown and various environmental groups are reading the Bush administration the riot act. Brown and believers are suing the Department of Energy on the grounds that its newest efficiency standards for electrical equipment are unlawfully weak. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Brown’s suit demands the Department of Energy apply strict codes for the country’s 40 million electricity distribution transformers. The transformers sit on utility poles and act as nerve centers that allocate electricity to homes and businesses nationwide. Brown claims weak standards promote greater electrical inefficiency, which contributes to global warming. The Department of Energy, however, says higher standards would generate insignificant energy savings, while devastating the economy. The Bush administration made similar arguments in defense of recent and flimsy standards for trucks, SUVs and commercial airplane emissions.
