Politicians, preachers, social commentators and self-help gurus have long criticized Americas propensity for divorce. Now environmentalists are demanding American couples mend their fickle ways...if not for the kids, then for the planet.
As if divorce wasnt burdensome enough, a recent study says splitting up encumbers the environment by doubling consumption, reported the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Michigan State University study says family splits lead to former couples taking up separate residences, which means two plots of land, twice the number of building materials and twice the number of household provisions. Add in shuffling kids from house to house and custody battle one-upmanship (the tendency for divorced parents to try to outdo each other with birthday and Christmas gifts) and youve got environmental adultery.
