U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman of California will replace John Dingell of Michigan on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has a key role in the nation's energy, environmental and consumer protection functions.
Dingell had been a strong advocate for consumer protection as issues like lead and phthalates in toys and other children's products surfaced. He's best known, though, for championing the interests of the automakers in his district, even as they made gas guzzling cars and SUVs.
Both Waxman and Dingell had a 100% voting record on environmental issues that came to a vote in the last session, according to the League of Conservation Voters. Both have consistently voted in favor of environmental protections.
The committee will have an important role in the future of not only the auto industry, but any global warming legislation or other environmental initiatives that Congress considers under the Obama Administration.
