Costa Rica aims to go completely carbon neutral by 2021, a move that could be a first in the world.

New Zealand is considering a 10-year ban on new fossil fuel power plants, and many countries are devising schemes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by various amounts, but no other nation has made such a bold pledge.

Costa Rica, a small Central American nation, has long been a friend to the environment by promoting eco-tourism that preserves native rain forests. It has recently planted its 5 millionth tree, according to Reuters, and plans to plant another 8.5 million by the end of next year.

Preserves cover more than a quarter of the country, which is home to almost 5% of the world's biodiversity, according to Reuters. Forest cover has actually increased in the past 20 years, to more than half the country.
