Overhauling Consumer Product Safety

Senate Approves Sweeping Reform

When you make a purchase, it should not harm you.

That simple idea seems to have guided the Senate as it passed sweeping reforms to the Consumer Product Safety Commission that consumer advocates have long sought.

It took a record number of recalls of unsafe products, especially toys that contain toxic lead, many originating in China.

The law still has to pass muster in the House.
