"Eco-reps" are transforming college campuses by pulling prank-like stunts of a particularly green cast.
Some 40 campuses now participate in the Eco-rep program, which started in the 1990s in order to "cut waste and energy consumption by showing classmates how to lighten their environmental footprints," as USA Today put it.
How do they do it? They may spread trash around the college green to show classmates how much waste ought to be recycled, as University of Vermont students did.
In other words, they take some of the best elements of college spirit -- optimism, creativity and unbridled fun -- and turn it toward a more sustainable campus and future.
