Despite experiencing severe drought — the worst in over a decade, China is predicted to weather unprecedented floods by 2020, reported China’s Xinhua General News Service. According to a recent report from China’s Ministry of Water Resources, 41% of China's population will face flash floods and mudslides, historically responsible for more than 70% of China’s death toll.

Aside from loss of life, the Chinese government is dually concerned for China’s burgeoning economy. Areas most prone to flooding are river-dependent manufacturing regions, where 67% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) is produced.

Hoping to maintain China’s great industrial revolution, Chinese officials are planning to implement monitoring, forecasting and flood defense infrastructure.
