A major earthquake, 7.7 on the Richter Scale, in Northern Chile has been followed by six other quakes ranging from 4.7 to 5.7, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which monitors earthquakes worldwide.
At least 20 injuries resulted, according to the Associated Press.
The first quake struck at 12:40 p.m. local time (10:40 a.m. EST) and the other six followed in the four hours since.
The quakes struck in and around Antofagasta, described by Wikipedia as "a port city ... about 700 miles north of Santiago. It is the capital of both Antofagasta Province and Antofagasta Region. According to the 2002 census, it has a municipal population of 296,905 and an urban area population of 318,779."
