The Southern Baptist Convention has ratcheted up its support of personal and legislative action to tackle global warming, arguing that tackling the issue amounts to caring for creation, the New York Times reports today.
Second only to the Catholic church in membership, the evangelical denomination holds considerable political and social sway. This represents the latest, and perhaps greatest, sign that the momentum in this traditionally politically conservative community is swinging toward doing something about the signature environmental issue of this generation.
If the statement is taken at its word, preachers will be preaching about the importance of environmental protection, and the importance of bold action, rather than an "uncaring, reckless or ill-informed" response.
However, in the church hierarchy, one important branch did not sign on to the new statement: The political arm known as the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.
